Our second album is a reflection of how Choca Blues rolls, unforced, rooted and true to the moment. The Way We Roll speaks to our shared rhythm as a band and to the stories that move us. The title also nods to our original track “Easy Rollin’,” a blues song about choosing simplicity, honesty and ease in a world that often pulls the other way.

This record was shaped by the road, the studio and all the spaces in between. Music that rolls forward, carrying where we’ve been and who we are becoming.

Shuck & Jive with CHOCA BLUES

Who are we?

Choca Blues: Where the journey matters more than the destination.

Born on the shores of Lake Atitlán, Guatemala, Choca Blues blends raw blues tradition with soaring melodies and a contagious love for music. Their story is one of resilience, transformation, and the magic that happens when international talents come together.

For lead vocalist and co-founder Dieneke, originally from the Netherlands, the band marked a rebirth. After burning out in the Dutch music scene, she stopped singing for seven years—until Guatemala reignited her passion. Together with Carlos Funk, whose guitar work spans resonator, acoustic, and electric, Choca Blues began to take shape in 2021.

The band found its heartbeat when Whitney Petty (Thunderpussy )joined on drums, producing and arranging much of their debut album The Wind. With tracks like The Wind passing 19,000 streams, their first record opened doors to wider audiences. In late 2024, bassist Carol “The Bounce” added her stand-up and custom electric bass, bringing depth and groove to the sound.

Now, with their second album already recorded, Choca Blues is preparing to release on the 20th of february! Their music tells stories of resilience, joy, and connection—rooted in the blues yet always reaching higher. For Choca Blues, it’s not just about songs, but about carrying the spirit of the blues into new places, together.

Why We’re Called Choca Blues

The story behind the name, the coin, the wings and the woman.

In 1964, the male powers that were decided it was time for a change—to the 25 cent coin, that is. Back then, Guatemala’s currency, the Quetzal (named after the stunning bird), was still tied to the U.S. dollar. Up until then, every coin and bill featured images of powerful men. So, in a gesture that could be seen as progressive or tokenizing—or a bit of both—they chose to put a woman’s face on the 25 cent piece.

And so began a search for “the face”…
